Online users are famous for getting behind various causes. Now hundereds of thousands of people are trying to save the life of a spanish Ebola patient’s dog.

Excalibur is Teresa Romero Ramos’ dog. Ramos is the first European to test positive for Ebola and currently is in isolation in Spain. Health authorities the country are now worried that her dog may also become infected with the deadly virus, CNN reports.

It’s not really known whether dogs can get ill from Ebola and if they can even carry the virus and spread it to humans. Nevertheless the authorities don’t want to risk as there have been documented cases of wild animals like gorillas and chimpanzees that have been infected by Ebola.

So authorities prefer to just kill Excalibur and not take chances. The problem is they don’t even plan to test him for Ebola, reports NPR. They simply want to kill him and that’s that.

The Internet community though does not like that plan. Not one bit. People have already set up an online petition that calls for Excalibur to be saved. The petition calls for Excalibur to be tested and put in quarantine or isolation not killing him.

The petïtion states that: “Not only is it unfair to be infected with Ebola by the sanitary assistant due to the lack of necessary means, they must also lose their dog as a result of an thoughtless decision, as it would be much easier to isolate or quarantine the dog just as they have the victim’s husband. If this woman were to die, the dog which has accompanied them for so many years would be an important emotional support for her husband. This is not “just” a dog, for this couple he is one of the family”.

Javier Limon, who is the husband of Teresa, and is in quarantine as a precaution, also called for help to get Excalibur saved. So far authorities haven’t said if they are going to carry out their plans and euthanize Excalibur and he awaits his fate.

We think that animals should be treated equally as humans in such cases and first get all the possible help. We share the planet with them not only for the laughs but for the tough times as well.
