Squishmallows Are Coming to the Big Screen: Amazon MGM Studios and Jazwares Announce New Film

If you’ve ever looked at your growing pile of Squishmallows plush toys and wondered what they would be like as movie characters, you’re about to find out. Amazon MGM Studios and Jazwares have announced a deal to develop a Squishmallows movie, bringing one of the world’s most popular plush brands to the big screen.

The announcement is particularly exciting for plush collectors because Squishmallows have already grown far beyond being simple stuffed toys. With thousands of characters, hundreds of millions of plush sold and a huge social-media following, the brand has become a genuine pop-culture phenomenon. Now, it is getting the Hollywood treatment.

Squishmallows Are Getting Their Own Movie

Amazon MGM Studios has signed a deal with Jazwares to develop a film based on the Squishmallows brand. The project is being produced by Beau Flynn through his FlynnPictureCo. banner, with Jazwares also producing. Shelby Thomas is overseeing the project for FlynnPictureCo.

That’s about as much as we know about the movie itself for now.

There is currently no announced release date, plot, cast or confirmation of whether the Squishmallows film will be animated, live-action or use a combination of techniques. That leaves plenty of room for speculation, but one thing seems certain: the filmmakers have an enormous cast of potential characters to work with.

And that could make this very different from a typical toy-based movie.

From Plush Toy to Global Franchise

Squishmallows launched in 2017, but the brand has grown at an extraordinary pace. What started as a line of soft, squishy plush animals has developed into a global lifestyle franchise sold across more than 60 countries.

According to Toy World, more than 600 million Squishmallows have been sold worldwide, with approximately two plush toys sold every second. The brand now includes a universe of more than 3,000 original characters, ranging from familiar animals to much stranger creations.

That variety could be one of the movie’s biggest advantages.

Among the characters is Cam the Cat, the Squishmallows brand ambassador, alongside Bigfoots, axolotls and even Lil Gouda, a character based on a grilled cheese sandwich. It is a wonderfully strange collection of personalities that gives a potential movie plenty of creative possibilities.

What Could a Squishmallows Movie Be About?

That’s the big question.

Unlike franchises such as Pokémon or Transformers, Squishmallows don’t come with one established cinematic storyline that filmmakers have to follow. Instead, the brand is built around individual characters, personalities and the appeal of collecting them.

That gives Amazon MGM Studios considerable freedom.

The movie could potentially introduce audiences to a whole Squishmallows world, with different characters living together and going on an adventure. Alternatively, filmmakers could focus on a smaller group of characters and use their personalities to create a family-friendly story.

For younger viewers, the soft and colorful appearance of Squishmallows would naturally lend itself to animation. At the same time, the characters’ unusual shapes and enormous variety could make for a visually distinctive animated world.

For now, however, those possibilities remain speculation.

A Franchise With Huge Fan Appeal

One reason the announcement makes sense is the sheer size of the Squishmallows audience.

The brand isn’t aimed exclusively at young children. Its appeal extends to kids, teenagers, adults and dedicated plush collectors, giving it something that many toy properties struggle to achieve: genuine cross-generational popularity.

Social media has played a major role, too. Squishmallows has generated more than 15 billion organic social impressions across TikTok, Instagram and Snapchat.

That online community could become an important part of the movie’s marketing campaign.

Fans already share collections, hunt for rare characters and post videos about their latest Squishmallows finds. A movie gives that community another reason to engage with the brand and potentially introduces millions of new viewers to characters they may never have encountered before.

There’s Plenty of Merchandise Potential

Of course, anyone who loves toys knows that a Squishmallows movie is likely to mean new plushies.

Jazwares already has a huge consumer-products operation around the brand, with more than 120 global licensing partners producing everything from apparel and home décor to health and beauty products.

A movie could therefore introduce an entirely new wave of Squishmallows.

Imagine movie-exclusive characters, special editions based on the protagonists, new sizes and perhaps even plush versions of characters created specifically for the film. For collectors, the movie could become the starting point for an entirely new collecting era.

And with Squishmallows already being such a strong plush brand, the merchandise could potentially become one of the movie’s biggest attractions.

The Timing Couldn’t Be Better

There’s another interesting detail about the announcement: Squishmallows celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2027.

That makes the timing particularly significant. The brand will enter its second decade with a massive global fanbase, hundreds of millions of plush sold and now a major Hollywood movie in development.

It’s a remarkable transformation for a plush brand that only launched in 2017.

The movie could ultimately become another major milestone in Squishmallows’ evolution from collectible stuffed animals into a much broader entertainment property.

A Big Screen Adventure for Plush Fans

There are still plenty of unanswered questions about the Squishmallows movie. We don’t know what story it will tell, which characters will appear or even what format the film will take.

But the basic idea is already exciting.

Squishmallows has the characters, the collectors, the global recognition and the enormous social-media presence needed to support a major entertainment project. Amazon MGM Studios brings the Hollywood experience, while Jazwares brings intimate knowledge of the brand and its fans.

If the two companies can capture what makes Squishmallows so appealing—the cute characters, ridiculous variety, softness and collecting culture—the result could be one of the most interesting toy-to-film adaptations yet.

For plush fans, one thing is already clear: the Squishmallows universe is about to get a whole lot bigger.
