When you hear the name “Mattel”, you think about toys. Now, you will also think about movies. The company created a new division called Mattel Films.

Mattel Films will develop theatrical films which are based on its toy properties. Basically, you can expect movies about Barbie, Thomas & Friends, MEGA, even Hot Wheels.

Oscar-nominated “Dallas Buyers Club” producer Robbie Brenner will lead the division as executive producer, MarketWatch reports. He will report to Mattel’s CEO Ynon Kreiz. “Mattel is home to one of the world’s greatest portfolios of beloved franchises, and the creation of Mattel Films will allow us to unlock significant value across our IP,” said Kreiz.

Mattel also owns American Girl, Fisher-Price and other franchises. Would the company create movies for them all? Probably not. Instead, it will focus on its most popular franchises.

So far there’s no information about which franchise will get the first movie and when. Work is just starting on the new division, so there might be some time to wait before we start seeing the results.
