Build-A-Bear releases a Groundhog Day special stuffed animalJust in time for Groundhog Day, Build-A-Bear released a very special stuffed animal. It’s a plush Groundhog! And unlike the real groundhogs, this plush one loves to cuddle. As always, you can customize it, too.

For those of you who don’t know what Groundhog Day is, it may sound strange. It’s a popular tradition in the US and Canada. It’s celebrated on February 2nd every year.

It derives from the Pennsylvania Dutch superstition that if a groundhog emerging from its burrow on this day sees a shadow due to clear weather, it will retreat to its den and winter will persist for six more weeks, and if he does not, due to cloudiness, spring season will arrive early.

The earliest mention of Groundhog Day is from 1840. The first reported news of a Groundhog Day observance was arguably made by the Punxsutawney Spirit newspaper of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania in 1886.¬†It took until 1887 until Groundhog Day was considered “official”.

Groundhog Day remains a favorite tradition of many to this day. It’s so popular, that Build-A-Bear decided it’s time to have a special themed stuffed animal for it.

This is where we meet the new plush groundhog by Build-A-Bear. The plushie is quite realistic and looks great. It has soft, cuddly fur and the Build-A-Bear logo on one paw.

The stuffed animal is 14-inches tall and costs $16.50. As always, you can then customize it more. For example, you can get a special Groundhog Day T-shirt with “What shadow?” slogan on it. There’s also a pair of sneakers and jeans you can add.

As always, you can also use other outfits and accessories from the Build-A-Bear line. If you like the plush groundhog, you have to be fast. It has limited distribution in select stores. Or you can order it online from the Build-A-Bear shop. Additional accessories are sold separately.
